The Plague

May 11-16, 2026  — Day 47 to 53

Sun Outdoors Canyonlands, Moab UT

Susan went to Urgent Care on the 11th.

It wasn’t flu or COVID “just” some stupid virus. While Paul was waiting in the lobby, a masked up COVID patient came in. Susan convinced Paul to wait outside. (susan here: he did not need to catch COVID on top of whatever it was that we picked up.)

Paul was feeling a little off and he jokingly thought he should join her in the examination room. We went to the grocery store to stock up on easy to prepare foods, and the supportive things that were recommended then headed back to the RV.

By 5pm Paul was convinced he should be seen the next day. We went in again on the 12th for Paul’s “meet and greet” with the medical staff.

Curiously, we both got the same Rx, but Paul’s was $50, not $30, and he also got a bonus Rx that was over $200 and out of stock.

By the 13th Susan was slightly better and less sick than Paul so she headed into town to get his Rx. While she was in town she went to the grocery store for a few things that were forgotten the day before. Understandable because one of us was actively sick plus we were both exhausted. There was lots of sleeping for both of us but especially for Paul who slept most of Tuesday and Wednesday. Susan was concerned enough that if he was sleeping that much on Thursday we were heading to urgent care again. She was very happy to see that Paul was over the worst of it by Thursday morning.

Originally Susan had booked in for only 3 days. So optimistic! When Paul got sick we realized that he was a couple days behind Susan and she still wasn’t well enough to travel. We extended our stay until the 17th. Lucky for us the spot we were in was open so we wouldn’t have to pack up to move within the park. We just stayed inside “holding down the furniture” until we were well enough to rejoin the world. We played some games on the Play Station and Switch 2 and that was about it beyond reading when the brain fog wasn’t too bad.

Amazingly, we’re typing this on May 25th and we’re still coughing! It’s not as painful or frequent as when we were sick but it’s still there. The lingering effects of this bug are nasty. We’re happy to be past the worst of it.
