+2,200 feet

March 27, 2023 – Day 40

We never made it to Holla Bend this morning. I had had a bad nights sleep and wasn’t in a mood to get up at 6AM. So we just lounged around the trailer for much of the day doing planning things. We’ve booked our Graceland tickets, found a Cracker Barrel in Nashville, we couldn’t find any Harvest Hosts, and found a great campsite in the Great Smoky Mountains and booked that.

Then it was afternoon and time to go do something, but what?

I had a found a short, 0.5 mile, hike with killer views. It was about an hours drive away and it turns out that our destination, is Mt Magazine, the highest peak in Arkansas. We climbed, in the car, about 2,200 feet from the surrounding valley. The views from the various overlooks could have been great but Arkansas really needs to trim the bushes and trees and maintain the trail (it was a lot of rock rubble that was difficult to navigate).

Once on the hike, we were, also less than impressed. Oh, sure, there was one death defying cliff.

But frankly, the trail wasn’t worth it. You could see better views from the parking lot and then much better views from the surrounding “Overlook Drive.”

There was a plaque showing what peaks you could see and the distance. The furthest was 45 miles away and you could see horizon objects past that!

Miles/Day: 189 (being stationary for 3 days hurts the average…)
