March 25, 2023 — Day 38

Ha! You didn’t expect a blog, did you today?

Today was a down day. We hung around the campground doing life things, only some of which involved poo and we found ourselves at liberty in the afternoon. I figured we’d drive over to Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge. Instead I found a short, 0.2mile hike that had only 50ft of elevation gain and a spectacular waterfall if there had been recent rains. And it was near Holla.

And as our loyal readers already now, we had rain yesterday.

I figured we could do the hike first, because birding at Holla would be better in the crepuscular times. Yes, that’s a real word, I learned it awhile back and I love using it.

We entered the Mount Nebo State Park and the sign said, max 22 foot trailers. And I’m thinking, “That’s unusual.” and started driving. (Susan here: They just don’t bother with shoulders on roads. Quite literally the other side of the fog line is the edge of the pavement. However in this case there were often ditches that were a 1-2′ deep. Hard to see it in the video but trust me it was there. Especially exciting when it was on the hairpin part of the turn.)

After the hairpins we stopped at one of the many overlooks.

We eventually made it to the falls. That 50′ decent of a hike was nasty but the view was great.

All in all it was a most excellent day. We barely drove anywhere and had a bit of fun. We extended our stay here by one day, Susan’s National Parks’ “geezer pass” is respected by the State of Arkansas so that cost us a whooping additional $8 for the added day. If anybody is doing the maths, yes, that’s a 50% discount giving us 4 nights of camping for a whopping $32 dollars, water and electric included. It’s such a good deal it almost feels criminal.

No maps, no numbers. Maybe we’ll blog tomorrow!
