Paul Lies About his Age and Plays Ring Toss with a Robot

August 23, 2025 New York State Fair – Syracuse NY We got up early and headed to the fairgrounds around 8:45 AM. If you’re over 65 you get in for free. Paul isn’t quite there yet. He bought an “all days” pass but the website curiously claims, “one entrance” which seems to oddly imply that once you leave you can’t get back in. We weren’t going stay all day so he just walked in with the group, Bill said “Old people.” and we were in! We saw them practicing barrel racing, then we wandered the horse barns, then back to the barrel racing to watch some fast riders. But first,…

Well, Actually, There was a Little Bit of Swearing.

August 22, 2025 — Day 2 Cracker Barrel, East Greenbush NY — New York State Fair, Syracuse NY We started off with breakfast at the Cracker Barrel. Some of them are pretty good, some are pretty awful. The one in East Greenbush is on of the good ones. When we got back we found that we accidentally parked overnight in someone’s “reserved” spot. We hung out some, Paul tried to figure out the AGS (Automatic Generator Start) and then hit Target for some groceries we forgot. Yes, we take up 6 to 7 spaces. We passed under this cool section of overpasses. It must be new because we think we’d…

    Ahead of Schedule

August 21, 2025 — Day 1 Keene NH — East Greenbush NY So, we’re blogging again? We hated that we left you in a lurch, but it was needed. It was taking up a lot of time and we were having a lot of fun birding. (susan here: Which would be boring for you, dear readers… “We saw a checkered blue-billed teal-tufted diddly-squat!” Can you imagine post after post of that. We can’t either.) But we miss it and we think some of you enjoy it as too. (susan here: yes, we believe that’s true so don’t disabuse us of that notion.) This time, we’re going to try and blog…

You Look Like People Who Know What They Are Doing

April 25, 2025 — Day 20 Pokomoke River State Park: Shad Landing, Snow Hill, Maryland Paul woke up with his right knee hurting even more than yesterday. He was in a real funk about it. There were fun things to do and his knee was not cooperating! There was biking with Susan to do. And kayaking to do! But that knee was really insisting on not being pushed. Making lemonade from lemons we decided to drive to the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge and bird watch. After all, it’s migration season and we’re here for birds, did we really NEED an excuse to go birdwatching? We took the back roads to see…

    The Unexpected Breakfast

April 24, 2025 — Day 19 Pokomoke River State Park: Shad Landing, Snow Hill, Maryland We’re pretty sure that you know we’re birders. But we’re not always very good birders. Susan’s parents would get up at 3AM, knock on her door to see if she wanted to come out looking for owl’s with them. (paul here, she didn’t.) Birds are easier to see in the early morning or late late afternoon. These are known as the crepuscular times. Yes, that will be on the test. And yes, we use that joke a lot, Paul started making the test after the last trip and it was too damn hard. Not the…

    Life Birds, Finally

April 23, 2025 — Day 18 Pokomoke River State Park: Shad Landing, Snow Hill, Maryland We went kayaking today! (susan here: especially exciting because it was the first of the season! Plus!? Last year was so horrible rain wise that we didn’t get much kayak time so it was long overdue.) We waited until late morning, about 11am, because it was too chilly earlier. We brought some power bars with us for lunch. (susan here: that would be PAUL’s first lunch and my only. I knew that when we got back to the RV he’d be prowling for a “real” lunch.) But, those darned Thule Hullavators that make transporting the…

    It’s Only 78.7 Miles

April 22, 2025 — Day 17 Kiptopeke State Park, Cape Charles Virginia — Pokomoke River State Park: Shad Landing, Snow Hill, Maryland Today is moving day, but moving only a little bit north which meant about 90 minutes of driving. We didn’t even bother hooking up the Jeep to Clifford since the bikes were on the back of Clifford. Also, one of us had to go back to the Eastern Shore Visitor Center to get stamps in our Passport book. We lazed about the morning, mostly because we couldn’t get to our destination early as check in was 3pm, so we were not hurrying until it was time to go…

    CQ POTA

April 21, 2025 — Day 16 Kiptopeke State Park, Cape Charles, VA Not much to say today, another lazy day. Oh, we didn’t want to be lazy. We’d planned on kayaking out to the concrete boats. But the winds were high, gusting to over 25mph. It would even have been unpleasant to head out on the bikes. We’re in the trees and the gusts were moving the RV a little. We’ll take a pass on that thank you very much! Paul went and played radio. The ham radio propagation was horrible, the big solar flare is wreaking havoc with the radio waves. But still, he got some contacts in. The…

With All the Frills Upon It

April 20, 2025 – Day 15 Kiptopeke State Park, Cape Charles, VA It seems that we are on the road a lot on Easter Sunday. This isn’t intentional, it just happens that way. Last year we traveled for the eclipse. This year traveled for the birds. What’s odd is that we both love spring in New England. You’d think we’d figure out by now that we like to be home in spring time! Next year, right? We lazed about in the morning. Soon it was time for lunch. But we had no time to make our Easter dinner, so we just foraged in the fridge. Paul had his “near Philadelphia”…

    Anybody Need a Life Boat?

April 19, 2025 — Day 14 Kiptopeke State Park, Cape Charles, VA We keep moving the bike rack around, if we’re not driving to a trail we put them on the back of the RV, if we’re going somewhere, we put it on the Jeep. It feels more secure since they are less visible. But this means we now had good access to the Jeep’s taillights and Paul could finally install the 4 pin trailer adapter, so we could then install the brake lights on the bike cover. The dirty connector near the top of the photo is the original Jeep taillight harness. The pair of clean connectors (2 are…
